“The dream is free; the hustle is sold separately”
I like this quote. I really, really like it. It kicks my butt every time I read it. These words are truth, tightly packaged in a tweet-able, easily digestible bite. There are other cool quotes about dreams and dreamers, but this one holds the reader responsible. This quote is a call to action. This quote says, “Yes, the dream is out there. It’s within your reach, but YOU are gonna have to get get it.” Just the word “hustle” sounds intense, doesn’t it? I picture the streets of New York City when I hear this word. I picture the soles of shoes hitting pavement; of sweat dripping from a brow; of noise and heat and discomfort and hearts pounding, and pulses racing, and exhaustion. Why do we so often embrace the dream, but deny the hustle? The dream is a good place to start. Often, I tell clients to “begin with the end in mind.” The dream is a beautiful gift, but it usually just shows up as a unicorn-like image in our minds and gives us a body full of warm-fuzzies, with little else to back it up. Making the dream come true….that’s up to us. Writing out our dreams and goals and posting them on sticky notes all over the house is excellent, but writing out, in detail, the steps that it takes to achieve our dreams is truly the most important part. Do you remember those dot to dots you used to do as a kid? The picture was already there on the page in its’ full glory, we just had to connect the dots before we could see it. The end result already existed…we just had to move one step (dot) at at time to get there. So it goes with dreams….and each “dot” is part of the hustle. The hustle is not, “I want to lose 15 pounds.” The hustle is:
1. Workout first thing in the morning
2. Don’t hit snooze
3. Go to bed earlier
4. Stop eating sugar late at night that messes up my blood sugar and keeps me from sleeping well
5. Get rid of the sugary snacks in my kitchen
6. Figure out what kinds of snacks are healthier
7. Consult a Health and Fitness pro
8. Stop making excuses for why I can’t have my dream
The hustle is the grunt work and YOU have to do it. It cannot be outsourced. It’s yours, and yours alone….or that dream will belong to someone else.
So I’m going to ask you to name your dream/goal and then start listing the steps you’ll need to take to get there. Some steps you don’t know yet….they will be shown to you as you go. But she who hustles doesn’t wait for a clear and straight shot before she takes off. She’s ready for the hurdles. She’s been waiting for this race her whole life. On your mark, get set…..GO HUSTLE!
