I think that everyone, at one time or another, has arrived at a “fork in the road.” I sure have. Have you? That “fork” forces us to make a choice.
1. Stay on the same path.
2. Dare to walk a new one.
A few years ago, I was in a very tough and unexpected season of life. I remember having a “light bulb” moment when I realized that I wanted to try taking a different approach in my life. Hard times can shake us, and might cause us to look at life through a different lens. That’s what happened to me, and I decided that my new approach was this: I was simply going to start doing the opposite.
Barring danger, of course, I decided that whatever I would have previously said “no” to, I would say “YES!” Whatever I would have previously said “yes” to, I would say, “No.” I’m not sure where I got this notion, but the results were fascinating. Over the course of a year, by “doing the opposite,” I…..
Earned a new business credential
Launched a new wellness company
Took a trip to NYC for a masterclass that changed my life, personally and professionally
Forged new friendships that are dear to me today
Began singing again, and performed with “The Houston Symphony,” and “The Philly Pops”
Went on trips and had adventures/created new memories
Sold my house, and moved with my son into a new town/neighborhood
….and finally, I found THE love of my life….and married him!
I don’t know the science behind doing the opposite, but I do understand the science behind re-training the brain to take new pathways….pathways that seem strange or unfamiliar. If we are stuck where we are, rerouting is a good way to get UNstuck! (If you need help with this, visit https://www.kimanderson.life and start following this gal. Good stuff!!)
Finally, you might ask what this has to do with health and wellness? I say: Everything. Maybe it’s time to do the opposite with your nutrition, or fitness…..maybe new habits need to be formed, while letting old ones go. If that’s where you are, know that I’m cheering for you. And if you try something new today….I’d love to hear about it!
